BioRad

The Digilab division of Biorad needed to re-invent its own image. Their static, heavily product-based literature didn't convey the sophistication and excitement their analyzers and infrared microscopes deserve. Long conversations with their senior product managers and interviews with users allowed the Inside Out team to position these instruments across the mindset of their different audiences, from the prestigious university chief researcher focused on getting the next grant, to the harried laboratory manager, the tight-fisted purchasing agent and the nervous young assistants. Under the banner of “Cruise to Success”, the annual sales meeting for Lenze-AC Tech rallied the salesforce with fun visuals, giveaways and games, intriguing and surprising even the most jaded attendees. From the very beginning – you entered via a gangway, were handed your own passport and sat in a room that had portholes in the walls– to the “Bermuda Triangle emergency” with its resulting evacuation, the vibe was upbeat and involved.

The “outside” portion of the project was exciting–attracting visitors to the website we had just created, and promoting a free test kit for their household wellwater. The operational side loomed like a nightmare, until we developed an online tool for the SolmeteX team to keep track of the tubes received, tests done, and results mailed. Direct mail works

As Milton CAT started plans for their new Batavia, New York facility, we knew we had a challenge in front of us. With very good and well-entrenched competitors already established there, upstate New York is a new and different territory for Milton CAT. The perception was, “Here comes the outsider…” After all, they are a New England company, and, a construction company, in a region where farming rules.

A carefully built direct mail campaign addressed the typical customer needs and wants, one by one, in seven consecutively mailed pieces. The eight one was a large tube containing a poster-size photo of the still unfinished facility.

The next step in the campaign, an invitation to the open house, implied a change of strategy. Now that we had established that Milton CAT was serious about setting up in Batavia, and, was going to do it right, we went from looking big and powerful, to being friendly and neighborly. 3,000 invitations were sent to the same group of people who had been receiving the previous postcards. 1,800 guests attended the two-day event.
